Casio Exilim EX-V8 reviewed

Steve's Digicams has a review up of Casio's Exilim V8, a slim 8.1 megapixel point-and-shoot featuring a 7x optical zoom, and a YouTube optimized H.264 video output. Key points of the review highlight the large 2.5-inch LCD on the back, decent movie recording quality -- it goes up to 848x480 at 30fps -- and some excellent camera shake / blur technologies, all crammed into an ultra compact case. On top of that it shoots some good photos, and has a relatively decent response time: in fact the only niggle Steve found was the fiddly controls. At only $299, sounds like a steal.

Sorry but this is not newsworthy.

-This P&S is not a particularly innovative camera
-This is not the first review, try the washingtonpost or digitalcamerareview
-Steves digicams is not the most cool headed camera
website; An overwhelming majority of their reviews end on positive
notes regardless of the actual faults and pros of the camera itself.

Other reviews of this shooter(see washingtonpost from 20 days ago) have not been so praising.

The review on the washingtonpost is skimpy and lacks support (charts/ samples/ comparisons).
Inferior picture quality? What is he comparing it to? an SLR? If not, then list some camera's in the same price range/feature set that exceed the v8's picture quality.

For me, its a great overall camera that has some nice and unique features. (widescreen video to name one.)

Anyone know the bitrate of this camera's H.264 video? That's the best indicator of the likely video quality, but I'll be damned if I can find that info anywhere. Perhaps that info is too complex/confusing for mere consumers...

I have always really liked the styling and diminutive size of the casio cameras, but have always been a bit disappointed by testshots made with them on you find the net.
It's a pity these things never all come together, that is good quality, small size, good features, not-made-by-sony-bastards.

Im starting to shy away from Canon P&S cams in favor of Casio. I dont like the direction that Canon is taking their designs, with that curved off shit instead of the perfect rectangle straight edge design.

Also, Casio uses MUCH better video codecs for their movies while Canon is still using the same old technology.

Um, Steve's reviews are not ones to be trusted, he rarely, if ever says anything negative about camera's that he claims to review.

Ken Rockwell also recommends Casio this camera. He is one of the best photographers that I know about.
