Ricoh Caplio GX100 reviewed

The chaps over at PhotograhyBLOG have an extensive (as in six pages) review of the handsome Ricoh Caplio GX100 that we told you about in March. Opinions from the experts concerning this 10 megapixel camera seem largely favorable, with high marks for design, features and ease-of-use, and only a few minor quibbles in the image-quality department. They seemed particularly excited about the Caplio's use of a RAW storage format, which the competition has apparently been moving away from. I have been lusting after the Ricoh GR Digital for quite a while. This camera looks even better. This seems like one of the few compact digital cameras that wasn't designed by a team of marketing executives.

It looks like those "35mm SLR" cameras they used to give away with magazine8 subscriptions. What's next? A cellular shoe phone?

*way back in the 1980s we used to get these things in the mail called magazines. They were always out of date, had too much advertising, and would pile up all over the place. Kind of like modern credit card applications, but bigger.

I know there are trade-offs but I still like my Panasonic TZ3 with its 10x optical zoom.

Yeah I've been waiting for a review on this and I'm quite impressed. However, it still hasn't won me over the TX3, with better optical zoom and a little less noise than the GX100. Oh... and the price. Wonder how the Sigma DP1 will fair, but I'll probably have a sub-compact by then.

I think I know that, seeing as I'm a Photojournalist. But when I travel for holiday reasons I don't necessarily want to carry around an SLR, so it just happens to be either this or the TZ3. They may be at different ends of the market but both would be great travelling cameras in their own right.

actually design is great from a functional-ease-of-use view. Buttons are in the right spot, easy to hold etc. Might not win the beauty contest but physical design is good.
