Fujifilm's FinePix S5700
Another hot off the pre-PMA presses, Fujifilm's got their new FinePix S5600 followup ready to go, the S5700. It's got a 10x zoom, 7.1 megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch display, 1600 ISO setting, image stabilization, 27MB internal memory, and, you're not going to believe this, xD and SD support. Unfortunately it uses four AA cells instead of a nice Li-ion battery. No price just yet, but the black model lands (somewhere) at the end of March, with the silver following in April.

problem with fuji is the lack of optical stabilizer & measurable xd cards, but upside is the battery: AA

xD and SD isn't too surprising. The Fuji F40, which is already out, also supports xD and SD. I wouldn't be surprised if the other cameras they're releasing also support both. Also, that whole "AA instead of Li-On" thing is a plus. AAs are easy to get so if you run out of juice in the middle of a photoshoot it's not hard to get more. Also, a set of AAs can recharge in 15 minutes and power a good 300-400 shots. How many Li-Ions can make that claim? And of course, the biggest bonus, they're cheaper! No propitiatory junk!
What I really want to know is the focal length of the lens. It has 10x, but is that a 4.444~ focal multiplier for a 28mm equivalent wide-angle like my S6000 or is that your normal 35ish mm? Also I'm surprised they dropped the maximum ISO back down to 1600. Most of their bridge cameras have a maximum of 3200. Maybe they realized most 3200s are junk? Still, it'd be nicer to have the option. Also, I really hope they increased the EVF resolution. Some other Fuji cameras (read: my S6000) only have 115,000 pixel viewfinders and that's just not good enough.

Using AA's is a big, big plus. You probably never travel if you think otherwise.

wow, i knew Fuji was working on the S5700, after they
stopped
production of the S5600, as a S5600 user, i belive they have made changes
to the Auto mode on this camera which is bad at determining the
correct white balance for the picture. If they have increased the EVF
resolution then it will be beter working with manual focus.SD is a
cheaper option to XD though XD's are faster than SD's as serial
speeds increase, we might see a total phase out of XD's and CF's and
transflash cards.27MB internal memory is a plus, atleast you can test
shots without inserting an XD card and will save Fuji from the shame
of providing a 16.00 Mb XD card which i belive are more expensive to
produce because they have to be custom built.i will wait for it get
as cheap as the S5600 and i just, i mean just might buy it too.

Hi dusty, the manual settings are pretty cool on the S5600, its not hard to use, i use the apperture priority mode most of the times, that gives you control over white balance, keeping the exposure auto.
its not difficult to use, but takes time getting used to. if you need to see what the pictures from this camera might look like, do a camera search on www.flickr.com
cheers!

Wow, this thing is the bomb. It's got the form factor I like, good zoom, the right memory and battery formats. It hits basically every checkbox on my digicam wants list. Of course I just bought a Kodak C875. :(
Perhaps I'll send that one to eBay.

WHATS WIT ALL THE STUPID CAMERAS?
Terry @ Feb 22nd 2007 2:12PM
I bought the S 9000 last year and was disappointed that it didn't have the image stabilization... a BIG negative in my opinion. I couldn't believe that they could produce a camera with that range 28m - 300mm and not have it.
lost the lense hood and tried to get advice on where to get a replacement (zero customer support.) Might be able to get one that fits at a camera store when I get to civilization (once a year on average) but when you don't have access to a good camera store then you are reliant on the internet.
The AA battery situation is the only way to go for me... I will not buy any camera which does not use regular batteries in an emergency.
Other camera is a Canon S2-IS (AA again)
This camera s-5600/5700 may be the answer BUT I won't be buying until some user reveiws are out. Being among the first buying the latest cutting edge electronics isnt the best way to go sometimes. I'll forego the bragging rights and make a decision later in the year based on cutomer reviews thank you.

Your S9000's lens thread is 58mm for the purpose of screw on filters and such, maybe that will help you get a new lens hood?
I never use my lens hood anyway, extra bulk for little benefit.

I was a huge fan of the S5000, but I had to drop it since 3megapixels blown up to 6 with that crazy Fuji SuperCCD looked terrible. I'm really glad to see the higher resolutions on these, since the lenses they make are so good, and were almost wasted on those lower-res cameras. This should turn out to be a great prosumer camera!

The Fuji technology I'm eagerly awaiting is in the Z5FD I pre-ordered.
The massive image processor in it finds faces (up to 10) and sets both PERFECT exposure and perfect focus, even if the face is stuck in a shadow, off center, and with a tremendously bright background. Also auto taking a flash and non-flash is cool too. I know from experience that Fuji's ASA 1600 is very noise-free; they combine the output of two sensors to do it. I'm not a professional. Almost all my shots contain people. I'm not too proud to get such expert assistance from a machine.
