Canon EOS 40D rumors abound

It all started with an EOS 40D splash page posted (and later pulled) from Canon's official Hong Kong web site. Now the 40D's specs are popping on digicam retail sites all over the Intertubes. Most interesting is the supposed spec sheet posted, pulled, and then extracted from a Belgian site by our tireless Engadget interns; here's what it says: 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor measuring 22.5 x 15-mm, 5fps burst mode, integrated anti-dust cleaning system, 2.5-inch LCD, and sadly... DIGIC II (not III) image processing. It's that last bit of information which makes us a bit skeptical. Although the DIGIC II can be found in their full-frame 400D, the improved DIGIC III is already loosed thereby bringing the whole spec sheet into question. No worries, if Canon is ready to push the 40D out the door then it'll be soon; the big PMA show kicks off in just a few weeks. Now quit staring at that picture, it's not the 40D.

Eos 5D still better than Eos 40D for CMOS sensor. Eos 40D is almost same like Eos Xti. Same idea like Eos 20D is almost same as Eos XT.

@Nick, right but the 5D is a full frame SLR using the DIGIC II. Hope Canon has some more interesting releases for PMA show! 2D?

Indeed so. Single-digit models always seem to be the top-end of the EOS market.
1D 1Ds 5D etc, all brilliant cameras. The xxD series don't seem to have changed much since the 20D (Which I own and I'm very happy with until I can afford a 5D, I WANT a full-frame sensor!) - afterall, the 20D was voted camera of the year a couple of years running.. for good reason.
Canon seem to be bringing out these intermediate models just for the hell of it - c'mon guys, give us a Prosumer full-frame sensored camera!

IMO, this is a warmed-over 30D, which was a warmed-over 20D. This is what the 30D should have been. If Canon wants to remain strong in this segment, they're going to need to trump the Nikon D200, which is a feature-laden camera now selling in the range of the 30D's original street price. I'd be floored if Canon released such a weak camera was the 30D's successor - floored enough to switch to Nikon.

As for the hopes of full-frame, I don't think Canon has any intentions of selling more affordable full-frame cameras. They have a corner on the market, they're staying strong in the 1.6X market with their EF-S lenses, and I'd wager most people who want full-frame want it in a capable camera body with some features - all of which cost money. I just hope Nikon comes to the FF game soon - and I hope Canon shows up to the 1.6x game with a better player.

Mind you, Digic III improvements upon Digic II is minor. The new features it offers are only viable for compact cameras, not DSLR's, such as face recognition and iSAPS.

I think the 40D page may have been intended to read 400D. If you look at the page, http://www.canon.com.hk/en/consumer/product/productdetail.aspx?product_id=10320&series_id=1000 now, it's changed to say 400D. Not to mention, the specs sound awful similar to the 400D.

If they are coming out with a 1D MkIII for only $4500 with digic 3 they are probably trying to come up with something that doesn't make it unnecessary to buy that.

There is on official announcement because Canon must be aware that Sony is eventually going to do to them what they did to Nintendo and Sega.

Just watch. Bye bye Canon and Nikon too. For the prosumer market anyway.

Like I said Eos 20d and Xt are almost same. I already tried on Eos D30,D60,10D,20D,20Da,30D,D. Rebel,Xt, Xti,1D,1Ds,1DMII,1dsMII,1d Mark IIn. Yeah. Most EOS AF point are not same. I must sell my 20D and get Eos 5D soon

If DIGIC III on the EOS line is anything like DIGIC III on their compact cameras, I'm glad they didn't use DIGIC III in the 40D. DIGIC III in the SD800 is considerably worse than DIGIC II in the SD700.

Why I want Eos 5D because it's lighter weight than Eos 1DMIIn,less noise at high ISO,full-frame and big LCD than Eos 20D. Eos 30D almost same as Eos 40D. Just more MP and self-clean dusts. In fact, self-clean dusts is not 100% clean.

Canon and Nikon have about 80% of the DSLR market share. They have owned that market forever; Sony isn't about to take that away, not with crappy sensors and lack of convincing offerings. The A100 is a total joke.

Have you any idea how skint Sony is? I doubt whether they have the resources to take on Canon who are super efficient. Canon are super canny and to be fair, there is a good chance that they are only playing with Nikon. The research and development budget at Canon almost certainly dwarfs the one available to Nikon and I feel, therefore that Nikon will never catch Canon. It is in Canon's interest to have some competition, but I do not think that it is from Sony. Sony need Playstation 3 and Blu Ray to be successful so desperately, that they will die otherwise. Samsung and Matsushita are in a much stronger position than Sony.
