Canon EOS 40D on the way?

Canon just slopped-out an "EOS 40D" DSLR page onto their Hong Kong site. No specs or pictures of the unannounced camera but it's fair to say that we're looking at a followup to their 8.3 megapixel 30D. No surprise what with Canon's market share slumping due to stiff competition from the Sony A100, Nikon D80 and some cannibalization by their own EOS 400D / Rebel XTi. No specs yet, but don't be surprised to find at least a 10.2 megapixel sensor, anti-dust technology, DIGIC III processing and sensor changes for better performance at high ISO. Clicking through you'll find a big red "X" in place of the EOS 40D text. Now the tough choice: click the "read" link below and refresh until the onset of RSI, or kick back and chill -- the wolf's on it and we'll be with you di-rectly... or at least once the specs do finally break.

Did you really say that the Sony Alpha is giving Canon stiff competition? Cleary you have not seen their sales figures. It is one of the hardest to sell DSLRs on the market and only really being bought by people who have KM lenses already.

Mike Panic - you took the words right out of my mouth. The Sony Alpha also does not seem to perform as well as the XTi in most comparisons. The only thing that would make me go to this if I already had all the gear from my Maxxum (including the proprietary hot shoe accessories).

There are strong indications it'll have the same sensor as the 5D.
The same way the Xti cut into 30D sales, the 40D will cut into 5D sales, and the line of succession moves upward from there until a new series of cameras emerge in time for Canon's EOS 20th anniversary this year.
I expect even bigger announcements from Nikon though.

References please. If they give it the 5D sensor, it will be a better camera in every way, with a price to match. It would effectively kill 5D sales completely... I don't see it happening.

XTi > 30D? Absolutely not. The 10 megapixel camera that is in the XTi is just a clever way to attempt to answer back to Nikon's D80. It's essentially become a megapixel war among the various companies. It's so that people can boast about how many megapixels their camera has.

Tests have shown that the XT > the XT in terms of noise. Why? Because the XTi has 10 million pixels shoved into the same size sensor as the XT. That leads to higher pixel density. high pixel density means more noise.

Ask any pro photographer. 30D or XTi. Most, if not all, would choose the 30D for its build quality, 5fps, rear jog dial, among other features.

seems to happen pretty likely, since canons 30d 150€ cash back promotion, that is going to end on january, 31st, seemed to target raise sales on the technologically 'a bit behind' 30d.

I have every doubt in my mind that the 40D will go full frame. If they go full frame, then that means that EF-S lenses are only good for the 20D/30D and the Rebels. That would not be a good way to make money as some of their EF-S lenses are pretty dang pricey. EF-S 60 2.8 macro + 17-55 2.8 IS to name a few of their EF-S gems.

Oh and weather sealed? I highly doubt it. Only their 1D/1Ds bodies are weather sealed. If they weather sealed the 40D, then I am pretty positive that many sports photographers would opt for the much cheaper 40D for the weather sealing as long as they dont mind losing the 45 point AF and 8.5 fps from the 1D mkII N.

I dont see Canon making a full frame **D series camera either, It just would'nt make sense. The sales of the 5D would drop so much, ok so they might be bringing out a 4D?... If someone only wants full frame then there would be no point for them to buy the 5/4D.

considering the D200 is weathersealed, I don't see why they wouldn't give the 40D the same treatment. Plus 8.5fps and 5-3 fps is quite a huge difference.

If they would put a 5d sensor in the 40d, it would just be a (improved) 5d. The 5d is hardly something more than a 30d with a different sensor and prism.
Am i the only one who's getting rather tired of these stupid fake leaks? Just give the specs and get it over with, instead of this stupid internet rumor generating crap (and this name doesn't help a lot, it was quite obvious it would be called the 40d, and people have been discussing the specs-to-be for a while).

It's unlikely to be "35mm" frame but I hope they give it a bigger viewfinder. Tried someone's 30D last week and compared to my aging Pentax DS it was like looking at the proverbial postage stamp at the end of a tunnel. Even the 400D was better in that respect.

And re competition.. the Pentax K10D is worth a mention. Certainly made waves on launch last month.

Canon hasn't released any info on it yet, but I'd be very surprised if it was weather-sealed. The 1D is the only Canon body that is, and I think they'd like to keep it that way.

Just a heads up all... The "Read" link on this page does NOT go to a "x" page, it goes to the EOS 400D page.

Perhaps someone just got overzealous and read 400D as 40D? I dunno.

I am hoping for a 40D release at PMA 2007 also. I figure 10.2MP, anti-dust sensor, DIGIC III, ISO 2000 and 2400... Prolly sD/SDHC format instead of CF. Same 5 fps, 1/8000 specs as 30D (but with larger sensor now). That's what I'm figuring on.

I'd love a 2.8" LCD that swivels... I'd also love to have the option of using AA batteries in-camera... Oh well, these prolly aren't happening for the 40D whenever it is released.

Rumors are funny as they get us hyped up or frustrated over "facts" that may not even be true.

If Canon sticks with their normal schedule, we won't know anything until end of February. However, you don't need much of a crystal ball to guess that the 30D replacement is a given to be 10 MPx (or more). Almost as certain is the DiG!C III processor.

The dust removal would be a nice touch to find some differentiating to the currently dominating Nikon line-up. Other than that we will have to see how much innovation Canon is capable to release on their 75th anniversary. Rumors of new sensors sound great to me, but it's a question of investment. I would also like to see a built-in RF flash trigger, but Canon seems set on selling the add-on.

One thing is for certain, it will be a good camera and Canon fans will embrace it, just as likely as Nikon fans are to find every little flaw. I am anxious to update my 20D (after the disappointing incremental update called 30D). Screen size doesn't matter that much to me as I am using Epson's P-3000, but achievable picture quality does. (The 20D has been a reliable companion for the last 2 years!)

PS: Canon cleverly routed cited webpage to the 400D, which could be an honest typo and frankly Canon may not be going with "40D" as the name since searching the internet will most likely present a lot of 400D's and the impact may be reduced. (For those not too familiar with the Canon naming, it may even be interchangeable?)

I'm still using an A2E. I have been waiting at least 3 years for a decent prosumer Canon with at least 10mp. I'm hoping the 40D ( or whatever it's called ) is at least 12mp, has a self cleaning sensor, built in flash, very, very usable Iso 1600 ( I hope packing all those pixels into a 1.6 size sensor doesn't ruin Canon's excellent low noise history. All for under $1400.00 I hope it's my time. If not I can wait another year!

I am so glad I did not buy the 5D. I have been using the 20D as a back up to my 30D. Both are extrodinary cameras. Full Frame? Can't see why at this point...my new 10/20efs is off the charts fantastic and as a pro wedding shooter I have no need to go wider.
But here is something to consider. Two of the same images...one shot with a 30D w/ 16 to 35 2.8 L mounted and one shot with a 1D mark 2 with the same lens. Time after time when I show these two 8x10 images to people they all say the 30D is the better image. Granted it may not be the "better image" in reality...but I shoot for clients...2000 images a week. If 10 out of ten pick the 30D image as the image that seems to be the best ( color saturation, contrast and exposure) then can someone tell me why I should spend 7 grand on a body? OR even 3 grand ie;5D?
For average wedding and event shooters like myself....I say spending any more than $1500 on a body is just an ego trip.
I can't wait to see what canons got in store for us in the 40D. I believe that in the future the D series Canon DSLR's will be remembered as some of the finest cameras ever made.

The 30D, 20D, 10D are all perfect for amateur and college photographers. And so will this new 40D. However they might as well be considered disposable quality for professional use. It’s not if, but when they will fail when in use.

I still heavily use my Mark II’s I bought years ago. In most forums, it’s hard to find someone still writing about how their 10D serves them well in their business today. Plus Uncle Sam compensates me for my Canon gear every year. What does a few K matter anyway?

The 40D is more a product from the Canon Marketing Department than from the Canon Engineering team, unless the later hails from ITT-Tech.

In my humble opinion the 40d will have a full size sensor. I also agree with everyone that this will kill all sales for the 5d. That is why they will also release a 7d or something along those lines with even more resolution. I think the two models will be improved together as not to compete wioth one another. Just an opinion.

The 40D (if indeed such camera will come out named so) will NOT have the FF sensor.

Canon currently has three distinct sensors and 4 distinct (actually 5 counting the 5D) lines of DSRL: the pro 1D line with 1.3 sensor, the pro 1D line with FF sensor, the 5D which is a line by itself, the 10/20/30D which have a 1.6 and more pro-like features and the 300/350/400D which have a plastic body and 'stripped' out feature set.

There is NO indication that this line up will change anytime in the near future.

Thus, the 40D will NOT replace the 5D. If the past is any indication, the '40D' will have the same sensor as the 400D but, with the body and feature set of the 30D, with the addition of the newer features added in the 400D/XTi (dust removal, etc...). However, It's safe to guess (or at least hope) that unlike the 400d, the 40D will use the newest DIGIC III processor.

The Canon 30D was taken off Ritz Camera's website. I asked the support guy and he said: The manufacturer may have discontinued or we are no longer carrying this item. And of course he cannot confirm anything about the 40D.

Well, I currently own the 20D, the step up from the 10D to the 20D was a dramatic one, unfortunetly the same could not be said about the 30D's succesion over the 20D. If a 40D is unveiled I suspect canon would have been forced to make that giant leap forward as alreay mentioned in previous posts. In order to protect the line of 5D sales a 1.3 sensor would make sense. I have invested in only EF lenses in the hope of cheaper FF houses, I guess I would settle for 1.3 if the carrot was tied on right.

I just love reading these "scoops" in hindsight. The 40D has proven to be one hell of a product. Unless you're hung up on the fact it is not full frame, this camera is almost a perfect value. More rugged than the XTi, not as expensive as the 5D, and a nice step up from the 30D.
