Thinking 1.7" sounded absolutely HUGE for a CCD (SLRs don't even go that big), I did a bit of research... CCD sizes are specified in a slightly odd way, as a fraction, usually with a decimal fraction in the denominator. So the "1.7" mentioned should probably really be "1/1.7" (which is slightly bigger than half an inch). BUT, that isn't even the actual size of the sensor either! A 1/1.8" sensor actually has a diagonal of just 9mm. More comprehensive description (with diagrams) on dpreview:
