Philips shows off new 17DC 17-inch LCD
We're a bit short on specs here, but it looks like Philips is prepping a new 17-inch LCD to be released for an undetermined price at an undetermined time. The 17DC display features 1280 x 1024 SXGA resolution, along with a decent 8ms response time. We can't say the design is anything fancy, but we're sure it'll get along fine.

What's the MGS4 logo doing there? Was that added in, or did they actually display that?
17 inch, not widescreen and 8ms. Anything exciting here? Unless they launch it at $100.
Don't take this the wrong way, but why even bother posting this? I'm sure Magnavox will be releasing some new CD players this year too, and I really don't care about either one. Like Intrepid said, unless this is super cheap or something there's absolutely no reason anyone would be interested in a mid-size, mid-price, mid-spec LCD.
It'd be nice to know what's so special about it. Better or worse than the 170B6 series?
^^^ What they said... Philips putting up the big bucks to buy off Engadget? This is advertising - not news.
I'm not positive, but maybe the impressive spec is that a 17" is supporting the 1280x1024 resolution? I haven't been monitoring the LCD market though so do correct if i am wrong.
According to EE Times, Philips is looking to sell its stake in the venture and get out of the LCD business:

Nothing impressive at all about this, 1280x1024 has been the standard resolution for years. The only thing that might be something special is what it is showing, according to Wikipedia, MGS4 is coming out exclusively for PS3, so maybe it has an HDMI input. Now if this display could actually show the full 1080p that the PS3 can output, that would be news-worthy.
Also curious... why is this an announcement?
Anyone?
OMG it's got the bezel of a 17" CRT!
1280x1024 isnt widescreen, so its just a bog standard 17" LCD Monitor, I bet 10 of these are released every sintle day.
17"! Wow that's huge...in 1998
All Philips tvs are teh CRAY-UP! I'd rather have an Advent.
@Jared
if philips tv's would be crap, what about this then:

Why Engadget!? WHHYYYYY???!!
Now I'm going to have to sue you for the injuries I've sustained by clicking a boring link.
Mmm wow, I've had a 17" LCD monitor with 1280x1024 and 8ms response time since 2002...
ALL HAIL TEH MIGHTY PHILLIPS!!!111
I'm using a monitor identical to this one, but it has 19 inches instead. The model name is phillips 190c, and it was a pretty good deal. Since I paid around R$1150 in brazil, it would probably cost something like 249usd (for the 19 inches version).
